Chapter Fifteen – A Spy’s War

Standing in the doorway gazing out at Menle’s small courtyard, Flavius thoughtfully rubbed his chin. It was morning and a full day had passed since he had arrived in Nola. There was not much more he could do but wait he thought. He needed to remain patient and let the informants do their jobs. It would be too risky for himself to show his face on the streets. For as an outsider, a Latin, the abuse he would receive from the townsfolk could possibly alert Kleptos to his presence, and no one would talk to him in any case. It was not worth the risk and the stakes were simply too high for him to cock this up now. If he screwed this up, other people including women and children were likely to die. It was a sobering thought. With a sigh, Flavius turned to stare at the slaves grooming the horses in their stables. The whiff of horse manure hung in the air and from further down the street, he could hear a woman’s shrill laughter. Since the interrogation of Nepos’s slave, there had been no sign of Archagathus. The doctor appeared to have gone off on his own - doing gods know what. It was for the best, Flavius thought. The man was an arrogant arsehole, but there was no doubting his desire and motivation to catch Kleptos.

Flavius was still standing in the doorway, when Menle abruptly appeared, striding towards him with urgent, purposeful steps, his eyes gleaming. The leader of the council was accompanied by three other magistrates.

“There is news,” Menle hissed, as he pushed past Flavius into his house. “We think we have found the woman.”

Hurriedly, Flavius followed Menle into the sanctity of his dining room.

“One of my informants came to me less than an hour ago,” Menle said, as he turned to Flavius. “He says he has tracked the woman to the place where she is staying. I know the address. Nola is not a large town. We are a close-knit community and strangers are easily noticed when you are looking for them. The house is not far from here. My man is stationed outside the house, now waiting for instructions.”

“Is he sure that it is Agrippina?” Flavius said quickly. “Is she in the building right now?”

“Yes, as sure as he can be, based on what the slave told us,” Menle replied, with gleaming eyes. “And there is something else. We think your Kleptos is with her. A man, a stranger from out of town, fitting his description, the one you gave us, was also seen entering the building, less than an hour ago. But you are the only one who can positively identify him.” Menle paused eying Flavius. “So, now what? What do we do now?”

“Good,” Flavius said with sudden excitement. “Good. Do you have enough loyal men to launch a raid on the house?”

Quickly Menle glanced at his companions and then nodded. “Yes, we have enough men,” he replied.
